Banyan Water Overview: Banyan Water is a growing IoT start-up revolutionizing the way enterprise commercial customers monitor, manage, and mitigate water risk and cost. We call it total water management for the built environment. We are venture backed and growing. Our customer base includes Fortune 500 and leading real estate companies. Banyan Water has an immediate opening for a hands-on Engineering Director to lead the development of Banyan’s software and technology team. You will be responsible for organizing the team’s day-to-day work and delivering the long-term technology roadmap for our company. You are an experienced engineering leader who cares deeply about building empathetic, high-performing engineering teams. You enjoy creating opportunities and helping engineers grow in ways that align with business needs. This is a high impact role reporting to the CEO, and you will help Banyan grow by setting our technology direction, building and nurturing a growing engineering team, and helping to nurture and grow our core business. This position is located in Austin, Texas.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Deliver complex, high-impact projects 
  • Operate the team day-to-day and be hands-on in project management and sprint planning
  • Manage and develop the team through hiring, retaining, mentoring, developing, and continually building the team’s capabilities
  • Manage offshore development resources when appropriate
  • Drive company, software product, and team objectives, carrying your team and relevant stakeholders along in the decision-making
  • Collaborate with software product peers to develop and guide implementation of software projects that deliver value to customers and partners  
  • Lead multi-year technology strategies that support the company mission 
  • Ensure major architectural decisions and technology choices support future possibilities for the company and mitigate critical risks related to engineering and technology 
  • Attend weekly sprint planning and provide prioritization guidance
  • Maintain accountability (via delegation) for progress on multiple engineering deliverables
  • Communicate project progress to stakeholders (all-hands share-outs, etc)
  • Collaborate closely with software product, sales, and operations teams to develop roadmaps and manage priorities
  • Conduct regular 1:1’s with engineers; identify and eliminate productivity blockers
  • Conduct engineering team performance reviews

What you need in order to be successful in this role

  • At least 5 years of experience scaling, developing, engaging, and leading a high-performing team that delivers high-impact and high-value work
  • B.S. in Computer Science, advanced degree preferred
  • Previous experience building start-ups
  • Clear and persuasive communication of complex technical information to a broad audience, including executives, product managers, and non-technical colleagues, and a commitment to fostering and growing cross-team relationships
  • Experience facilitating work in ways that counteract unconscious bias
  • Passion for and interest in developing, coaching, and supporting engineers
  • Previous experience in energy efficiency or smart buildings/metering a plus
